Developing an Accessible PET Beverage Bottle

A packaging company undertook an R&D project to make standard carbonated drinks containers easier to open for people with reduced grip strength or dexterity, while still keeping them suitable for mass production and maintaining carbonation performance. They began from an industry position where closures were primarily designed for gas retention and security, and where accessibility was usually addressed via separate assistive gadgets rather than through the container itself. 

The core technical challenge was whether required opening force could be meaningfully reduced without compromising seal integrity, internal pressure and shelf life, given how closely these factors are tied together in conventional closure systems. Because existing ergonomic and closure design guidance either ignored carbonation or treated ease‑of‑opening and gas retention as competing priorities, there was no established method they could simply adopt.
