Ergonomics-Led Development of Infant Weaning Tableware

A business undertook a research and development project to create infant products designed to support the development of early motor skills. Existing products were generally adapted from adult tableware or differentiated primarily through appearance, with limited attention to wrist control, hand–eye coordination or sensory interaction.

The key technical uncertainties concerned whether product geometries could be developed to help young children gather and lift food from different positions while remaining manufacturable and compliant with applicable child-safety requirements. Additional uncertainty related to selecting and configuring a flexible, food-safe material that could support more complex structural forms without collapsing or becoming excessively rigid.

Using iterative prototyping, the development team refined the product. Several development cycles were needed to establish whether an effective balance could be achieved between ease of use, developmental functionality and production practicality.

The resulting range demonstrated that feeding products could be engineered to support early developmental skills while remaining suitable for manufacture at scale.
