Low-Noise Amplifier for High-Frequency Communications

The project focused on developing a low-noise amplification module for a high-frequency communication system, evolving an earlier design to operate reliably in space-like conditions. Engineers addressed severe interference and noise issues, aiming to increase signal-to-noise ratio, lower the noise floor, and enable higher data rates than existing transceiver technologies allowed.

With no commercial product meeting these requirements, the team undertook applied research, prototyping, and iterative design refinement, covering radio frequency design, mechanical and thermal packaging, power integration, and sensing circuitry. Performance was tested across temperature, vacuum-like conditions, and other mission-relevant stresses, with results feeding into successive design cycles.

The outcome was a custom amplifier module exceeding typical industry solutions in noise figure, gain stability, and linearity, while remaining robust under extreme thermal and environmental conditions, demonstrating a clear technological advance where off-the-shelf components could not meet system-level need
