Metal 3D Printing Process
Within this project, the company sought to push beyond established practice by significantly increasing build speeds in metal 3D printing while preserving structural integrity, focusing on thicker layers, higher energy input, and more precise control of the melt pool and related process parameters. At the same time, it aimed to enable the use of additional metal alloys with differing thermal and mechanical properties in this faster process, which required systematic feasibility work, experimentation, and data gathering to understand how variables such as layer thickness, energy density, and alloy characteristics affected conductivity, elongation, porosity, and overall performance.
3D Print Support for Complex Builds
In this R&D project, the company focused in improving 3D metallic printing processes by investigating how support structures could be produced more quickly while still preventing sagging or collapse of complex builds, by experimentally balancing layer thickness, thermal heat transfer through the support, and laser printing speed for this alloy, in a context where no industry blueprints or parameter sets were publicly available. The work required iterative design, prototyping, and testing to find a viable combination that maintained structural stability, allowed practical post‑processing removal, and exploited the material’s properties, going beyond what a competent professional in the field could simply deduce from existing knowledge.
