Molecular Respiratory Virus Test

Developing Accessible Virus Inactivation Methods
A research team set out to develop an affordable method to inactivate viruses while preserving viral protein structure so that antigens would remain suitable for downstream analytical assays. Traditional approaches such as gamma irradiation and formaldehyde-based chemical treatments were ruled out because they either required expensive specialist infrastructure or risked damaging protein conformation and antigenicity. The scientists systematically explored several alternative strategies, including ultraviolet C exposure, pH adjustment, non-toxic chemical inactivators such as detergents, and physical methods like high pressure and osmotic stress, assessing their ability to render viruses non-infectious while keeping protein structures intact. They used analytical tools such as Western blotting to monitor protein integrity and PCR to assess nucleic acid integrity, ultimately demonstrating that accessible combinations of these approaches can inactivate viruses without denaturing key proteins.
